The use of polyphosphates is an economical method of treating water used in
typical restaurant ice-making units. The polyphosphates keep the minerals in the
water dispersed and in this way minimize the cloudy appearance of ice cubes.
Today, the most effective way to provide clear ice to home owners is with the
use of filters or the
reverse osmosis system to produce very low total dissolved
solids water. Feeding filtered or RO water to a refrigerator's ice-maker will
provide high-quality, very clear ice. It is necessary to reduce total minerals
below 10 grains per gallon for high quality ice.
