Culligan soft
water and tropical fish
In most cases, Culligan soft water is OK for tropical fish. According to
some authorities, both fully soft water and municipally-softened water would
have no undesirable or toxic effect for use in an aquarium.

When making the change from Laredo hard to
Culligan soft water,
it is necessary to make the substitution on a gradual basis. Over a period of
time add the soft water gradually into the aquarium, substituting it for an
equilivant amount of hard water. This is the basic rule in regard to any change
in the environment for tropical fish. This applies to temperature, pH of the
water, food, as well as to the hardness of the water. Drastic changes, of
course, could shock the delicate systems of such fish and would result in harm
to them. Preferably replace about one-fourth of the aquarium water at weekly
intervals with soft water. Eventually, the aquarium will have a supply of
essentially soft water and the fish will suffer no ill effects from the change.

While soft water is an improvement, in that it
reduces the clouding and scaling on the glass panels of an aquarium, it does
not, of itself, necessarily provide a suitable environment for the breeding of
tropical fish. Tropical fish authorities indicate that water of low dissolved
solids and pH may be more desirable for breeding fish, although this depends
somewhat on the species of fish. Since total dissolved solids (TDS), is
essentially the same for softened water as that of the untreated raw water, a
supply of water with a lower dissolved solids content must be obtained in some
other fashion. Reverse osmosis (RO) produces such water as does distillation.
Either will produce water with low TDS, which may be the most desirable for
breeding tropical fish.
